What is SSW Visa?
The ‘Specified Skilled Worker’ residency status, introduced by Japan in April 2019, allows skilled Indian youth to work and reside in Japan, addressing the country's labor shortages. As of July 2022, Japan has signed Specified Skilled Worker Memorandums of Cooperation (MoC) with 15 countries, including India, with the India-Japan MoC signed in January 2021.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the SSW Visa, applicants must meet certain requirements
Language and Skills

Basic Japanese language proficiency is required, as demonstrated through a language test

Applicants must pass a skill test relevant to the industry they are applying for

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and in good health

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and in good health

Applicants must have no criminal record and must meet all legal requirements to work in Japan

Features of SSW Visa
The SSW Visa is divided into two categories
SSW Visa

Workers under this category can work in Japan for a maximum of five years

Applicable to 14 specified industries including construction, nursing care, agriculture, and manufacturing

Family members can be brought in Japan after 3 or 5 years depending on the skill sector

Candidate can apply for Permanent Residency visa after 3 or 5 years depending on the skill sector

Simple process to start working in Japan

Clear a basic Japanese language test called JFT-Basic

JFT-Basic seeks to measure the level of Japanese language proficiency needed by foreign nationals about to reside in Japan mainly for work, to communicate in everyday life situations. It tests the Japanese language proficiency of a candidate across four sections:

a) Script & vocabulary

b) Conversation & expression

c) Listening comprehension

d) Reading comprehension
